JOB SUMMARY
The Office of the Vice President for Research, Sponsored Program Services, is recruiting for an early career financial services professional (Grants and Contracts Assistant) to process post-awarded grant financial transactions and provide grant-related portfolio and customer-service support. Under the direction of a senior staff member in the Office of the Vice President for Research, Sponsored Program Services, this position coordinates and performs specialized administrative and financial activities required for the processing and oversight of sponsored research awards and contracts.
This is an early career position in the field of Research Administration, requiring a bachelor’s degree and experience processing documents, record-keeping and performing data-entry; interpreting guidelines and procedures; and performing mathematical calculations and financial transactions in a customer/client-focused environment.
Sponsored Program Services (SPS) assists faculty with the administration of sponsored program activities to reduce administrative burdens on researchers and department staff. Our goal is to help faculty win more grants and provide comprehensive pre- and post-award services, including:
- Budget development assistance and review
- Proposal review and submission
- Industry contract review and negotiation
- Guidance and consultation on grant-related questions
- Assistance with intercampus award applications
- Set up of new grant and contract awards and related budgets in UConn’s accounting system
- Assistance with and processing of budget adjustments
- Final financial report preparation
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The area of specialization for this position is Post-award/Financial Services, and examples of duties include:
- Set-up of grant and sponsored project financial accounts in accordance with the terms of the award.
- Monitoring expenditures, performing financial transactions, and preparing invoices and reports.
- Maintaining records and documentation.
- Utilizing resources and developing professional networks to actively engage in experiential learning opportunities.
Examples of appropriate education and experience to be successful in this position include:
- Accounting, auditing, bookkeeping, and financial services.
- Organizational management, operational management, and business administration.
- Direct experience working in a complex institutional setting (education, higher education, hospital, regulatory or regulated industry).
- Direct experience, with personal accountability, working in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and one year of related experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience accurately performing mathematical calculations and/or processing financial transactions.
- Ability to interpret guidelines and procedures in resolving problems.
- Commitment to customer service, with demonstrated experience working in a customer-focused environment.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational, follow-through, and project-management skills, with the ability to multitask.
- Attention to timeliness, accuracy, and completeness.
- Ability to work after usual business hours on occasion to meet business deadlines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree, plus two years of related experience.
- Experience developing or working with budgets.
- Demonstrated experience performing financial transactions.
- Experience developing financial reports.
- Prior experience working with grants and contracts.
- Prior experience working in a higher education environment.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time, permanent position, with a schedule of 35 hours per week. The University offers a competitive salary and outstanding benefits, including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. Salaries typically start at the minimum of the salary band and range to the mid-point for progressively experienced candidates. This position is based on the main campus in Storrs. Telecommuting and/or a hybrid work schedule may be possible subject to authorization and University policy. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
