Job Description:
Information Technology Services (ITS) at the University at Albany, seeks a Senior Network Engineer to design, implement, develop, and maintain the University network infrastructure, which spans multiple campuses and satellite locations within the Capital Region. As the most senior technical position in ITS' Network Design and Engineering group, she/he/they are responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance to other team members, including network engineers, cabling technicians, and telecommunications pathway designers. The successful candidate has the knowledge and skills to make strategic recommendations to build and grow the University network in order to meet the complex, evolving needs of a sophisticated, R1 research institution, and the technical acumen to excel in a technology environment where team members play multiple roles.
The Senior Network Engineer works directly with researchers, faculty, and IT staff to understand their advanced networking needs and design and implement solutions. As a technical expert in the field with a deep understanding of networking needs across the institution, he/she/they are involved in evaluating new applications and proposed solutions, mitigating security incidents, assuring compliance with federal, state, and other regulatory requirements, and exploring new technologies and practices.
He/she/they are responsible for envisioning and documenting current and future-state architecture and working with management to develop road maps and strategies that align with organizational goals and standards. The Senior Network Engineer plays a key role in ITS, working with others to establish standards, best practices, and other infrastructure requirements. This includes serving as a member of the ITS Architectural Review Board, contributing to budget planning efforts, and participating on numerous project and service teams. The successful Senior Network Engineer, often called upon for advice and consultation, is approachable, has developed strong interpersonal skills, and communicates well with management, researchers, faculty, and IT peers of varying technical ability.
- Serve as the primary technical resource and subject matter expert for the design, planning, implementation, operation, maintenance, growth, and documentation of the University's network.
- Lead activities for network architecture and project design phase activities.
- Directly participate in implementation, operation, and maintenance activities as required.
- Install, configure, and maintain network infrastructure applications.
- Plan and build infrastructure that supports growth.
- Develop and maintain network current and future state documentation.
- Maintain subject matter expertise by exploring new technologies, staying current with industry trends, following a professional development plan, and regularly sharing knowledge with ITS stakeholders.
- Proactively evaluate network performance, identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.
- Analyze and diagnose network problems, troubleshoot failures, and recommend corrective solutions.
- Provide clear explanation of technical issues to leadership and stakeholders.
- Contribute to inventory management and scheduling maintenance and upgrades.
- Serve as a key member of project, service, and incident response teams
- Maintain security posture in accordance with industry best practice and ITS policies and procedures.
- Assist other groups in troubleshooting problems that require network analysis or expertise.
- Provide technical direction to co-workers and offer comprehensive advice and instructions.
- Actively manage or participate, as assigned, in ITS and campus projects.
- Work well independently and in teams.
- Consistently follow and actively contribute to ITS policies, procedures, and processes.
- Be prepared to work at multiple sites.
- Be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligations and expectations.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least five (5) years of relevant experience in network design and engineering including the use of technologies such as: switching, routing, Wi-Fi, VoIP, and firewall standards and protocols including IP, IPv6, STP, OSPF, BGP, VxLAN, IPSec, 802.11ac, and SIP
- Excellent problem solving and diagnostic skills across all layers of the OSI model
- Experience with fiber optic and copper cabling standards
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Applicants must clearly address their ability to work with a culturally diverse population in their application or during the interview.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least eight (8) years of relevant network experience
- Experience with data center networking technology such as leaf/spine, EVPN, and VXLAN
- Experience supporting 802.1X authentication and Network Access Control (NAC) solutions
- Experience operating a wireless access environment of at least 500 access points
- Experience operating a network supporting a large-scale VoIP deployment
- Experience with virtualized/container-based/cloud networking within VMware, AWS (Amazon Web Services), or Microsoft Azure
- Experience with advanced threat management implementations such as Palo Alto, Checkpoint, or Fortinet
- Experience working in a multi-vendor network infrastructure
- Enterprise-level networking certification from a major provider (i.e., CCNA, JNCIA, etc.)
- Scripting Experience
