Sports Multimedia Journalist
News-Press & Gazette Company, St. Joseph, Mo., is hiring to fill a Sports Multimedia Journalist opening in its multimedia newsroom producing and presenting content for all platforms – television, digital and print.
The specific opening calls for a reporter who will cover local sports topics — news and features — that lend themselves to multimedia storytelling. Beat coverage will include the game and training camp coverage of the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as other K.C. area teams, Division II programs at Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State, 10-plus area high schools and area NAIA and junior colleges.
Applicants should expect to use all of the tools of the trade, inclusive of anchoring in-studio and live on location, as well as shooting, editing and scripting video to tell compelling stories focused on our core market. Over time, all reporters in our newsroom become true multimedia journalists as they add to and develop their skills to become equally adept at reporting for TV, web and print.
Core requirements: commitment to journalism and multimedia news reporting; ability to learn new skills; understanding of journalism ethics, press law and the competitive aspects of daily reporting; and ability to do good work on deadline, for both broadcast and print.
We prefer a college degree with a concentration in journalism and two years of practical experience.
A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record also are required, as is possessing sufficient mobility to allow for travel to reporting locations. Fluency in English and a comprehensive knowledge of sports and sports-related activities is a must. Physical requirements include the ability to lift, move and operate TV field news/sports coverage equipment. Candidate will need to be flexible to work any shift as needed. Employment is contingent on passage of a drug screening and a background check.
