Position Vacancy: Program Officer
Humanities Kansas is seeking a Program Officer to develop, implement, and manage programs and outreach that increase public access to the humanities statewide. Humanities Kansas is an independent nonprofit spearheading a movement of ideas to empower Kansans to strengthen their communities and our democracy. Since 1972, our pioneering programming, grants, and partnerships have documented and shared stories to spark conversations and generate insights. Together with our partners and supporters, we inspire all Kansans to draw on history, literature, ethics, and culture to enrich their lives and serve the communities and state we all proudly call home.
Job Classification: Non-Exempt, Full-Time
Work Schedule: 8:30am – 5:00 pm Monday-Friday in Topeka KS
Reporting Relationship: Executive Director
Major Duties
Manage Speakers Bureau, Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK) book discussions, and the Poet Laureate of Kansas programs. This includes cultivating, recruiting and retaining constituents as well as humanities consultants; maintaining database entries for event and transaction details; maintaining online calendar of events; managing event evaluations and observations; preparing cost share and other reports; managing publicity and promotions including both print and social media. Maintain and develop networks to boost relationships both inside and out of the statewide humanities sector. Develop and manage special projects, as needed. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a humanities discipline required. Master’s preferred.
- Two (2) years’ experience in similar employment.
- Proficiency in social media platforms
- Demonstrated database management skills, ideally with FileMaker Pro.
- Computer proficiency with Mac products and software
- Ability to communicate positively, clearly and professionally through both verbal
and written skills. - Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to organize, multi-task, plan and set priorities with minimal supervision.
- Ability to exercise good judgment with a strong attention to detail and level of
accuracy. - Ability to successfully manage multiple projects with varying deadlines.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to read computer screens and email, mail and talk on the phone.
- Ability to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds and traverse flights of stairs.
- Ability and willingness to travel and work evenings, as needed.

- Professional and deadline-oriented environment in an office setting.
- Frequent Interaction with staff and program users.
