GENERAL INFORMATION: The Journeyman Powerplant Operator is responsible for working in the control room or as a roving operator under the direction of the chief and/or senior operators. Work shifts will be as necessary to fulfill work schedule requirements and may be on regular scheduled shift or on relief with no regular scheduled shift or work week. Successful applicant must reside within a 30 mile radius of Wells Dam for the duration of their employment in this classification. Selected candidate must establish such residence within 3 months of employment. This position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. There is a one-year probationary period associated with this position.
CORE DUTIES:
Perform all duties in a safe and proficient manner in accordance with policy and procedure
Start, stop, synchronize and control operation of generating units
Inspect p​owerplant and embankments
Inspect and control auxiliary equipment, ancillary equipment, and miscellaneous powerplant equipment
Regulate spillway gates and fish facility equipment
Switch High-Voltage equipment
Must comply with safety rules and safe clearance (LOTO--WAC 296-45) procedures, place protection clearance tags, initiate corrective measures in the event of emergency conditions affecting powerplant operations unless relieved of portions of these responsibilities by the chief or senior operator
Respond to emergency call out
Other duties may be assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, ABILITIES:
Satisfactorily completed a high school education or equivalent
Completed a three year apprenticeship as a Powerplant Operator OR have five years previous job experience as a powerplant operator
The ability to communicate with co-workers in a clear, concise, courteous manner
The ability to function cooperatively and work well in a team environment
Capability of following directions and working in compliance with established guidelines
Aptitude with computers, communications systems, SCADA and data processing equipment
Current Washington State Driver License and proof of good driving record
Current First Aid/CPR Card
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to distinguish basic colors
Ability to repeatedly lift heavy objects, sometimes weighing up to 100 pounds
Ability to work in elevated areas, climb ladders and stairs and walk over uneven surfaces
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Applicant must be physically able to perform the various duties of a roving powerplant operator including working in hot, cold, wet, and noisy environments
Must have a full range of hearing and sight for personal safety
