The Desert Research Institute (DRI) seeks a mid-career or senior research scientist capable of developing an independent research program centered on their area of expertise while simultaneously performing the duties of program manager for one of DRI's largest research contracts. The contract is the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration, Nevada Field Office, Technical Research, Engineering, and Development Services (TREDS) contract. The TREDS contract is a six million dollar per year, multi-year contract, and DRI has held this contract for the last several decades. This position is located at the Las Vegas, NV campus. The DRI TREDS Program Manager manages the business, reporting, and compliance requirements of the contract and has ultimate responsibility for safety, security, and quality assurance for all work conducted under the contract. The successful candidate will have a ten-plus year record of successfully promoting, and conducting research within one or more of the following disciplines: archaeology, atmospheric sciences (particulates), civil engineering (water resources), environmental sciences, geology, geophysics, health physics, hydrology, hydrogeology, groundwater modeling, remote sensing, seismology, or related disciplines. Preference will be given to candidates with a successful record of promoting and obtaining funding for large multi-investigator research projects. The successful candidate will be encouraged to integrate their research interests with the programmatic needs of the TREDS contract, if the opportunities exist.The successful candidate is expected to spend approximately one-half to two-thirds of their time conducting independent research and one-third to one-half their time serving as program manager for the TREDS contract. Preference will be given to candidates who have managed large research programs for 5 years or longer. U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain a Q clearance are requirements for this position.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:- Masters or Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution in archaeology, atmospheric sciences (particulates), civil engineering (water resources), environmental sciences, geology, geophysics, health physics, hydrology, hydrogeology, seismology or related field if the latter had an emphasis of, or direct application to, activities described above.- Ten or more years of experience conducting an independent research program within one or more of the previously mentioned areas of expertise.- Evidence of potential to secure and maintain adequate funding through federal, state and local agencies.- Demonstrable experience in project management, to include the management of personnel, budgets, schedules, compliance, etc.- Strong oral and written communication skills.COMPENSATION/BENEFITSStarting salary is commensurate with experience and education.
