ASSISTANT BUILDING PLAN EXAMINER
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Review plans and specifications, perform difficult and skilled inspection of buildings to insure compliance with all of the State of Michigan building codes and City Ordinances.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is under the general supervision of the Director of Buildings and Safety Engineering and Plan Examiner/Building Official. The employee is expected to exercise mature judgment in handling assignments.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following:
- Review all plans and specifications for commercial industrial and residential building construction to insure compliance with Michigan Building Codes and City Ordinances.
- Assist and advise contractors and others in filling out applications for building and zoning permits.
- Inspect building construction during and upon completion to insure compliance with Michigan Building Codes and City Ordinances.
- Provide assistance and information to contractors and the general public in regards to Michigan Building Codes and City Building Ordinances.
- Maintain records and prepare detailed reports of plan reviews, inspections, complaints and violations.
- Work in cooperation with heating, plumbing, electrical, fire, zoning, rental, property maintenance and health inspectors.
- Perform related work as assigned.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Considerable knowledge of the Michigan Building codes and City Building Ordinances.
- Considerable knowledge of engineering principles and practices as related to construction methods, techniques and materials.
- Ability to analyze complex structural designs to determine Code compliance.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive reports in connection with inspections and violations of ordinances.
- Ability to understand and work with specifications, prints and drawings.
- Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
PRELIMINARY QUALIFICATIONS: An applicant shall possess, upon application, based upon the closing date of the posting, the following education and experience or its satisfactory equivalent as outlined and certified by the Civil Service Commission.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Three (3) years experience as a Building Inspector and/or Plans Examiner.
- Compliance with the State of Michigan Public Act #407 ‘Skilled Trades Registration Act.”
- Possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Michigan.
- Driving record must meet city standards for insurability.
OR
- Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering or Construction Management.
- Compliance with the State of Michigan Public Act #407 ‘Skilled Trades Registration Act.”
