The City of Eden Prairie will hire either an Engineering Technician II or Senior Engineering Technician (depending on candidate qualifications) at the end of the hiring process.
Status: Full-time regular position, non-exempt
Salary Range: Engineering Technician II: $29.00 - $35.21 per hour (depending on qualifications) Successful candidates will have the ability to increase responsibilities and progress into Sr. Engineer Technician and meet all minimum qualifications of the Sr. Engineer Technician within two to three years of hire date; Sr. Engineer Technician: $32.61 to $39.15 per hour (depending on qualifications)

Public Works Department
The Public Works Department is comprised of Engineering, Water Treatment Plant, Utility Field Operations, Street Maintenance, and Fleet Services. The department is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, and environmental management, of the street, water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure systems in the community.
Position Responsibilities
The Engineering Technician position in the Engineering Division supports Engineering and other Public works staff in the areas of construction inspections, design, plan review and various municipal engineering tasks associated with planning, designing, constructing and maintaining the City's infrastructure. The City's infrastructure consists primarily of transportation, sanitary sewer, water, and drainage systems. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:
- Represents the Engineering Division internally and externally to convey City standards, policies and maintenance practices. Works with contractors, consultants, and other agencies to enforce compliance of new construction and re-construction projects.
- Inspection and quality control of bituminous, concrete, grading and base, storm sewer, watermain, sanitary sewer, compaction, erosion control, traffic control, ADA compliance and other construction related activities.
- Takes a lead role in managing construction projects including directing and managing contractors, conducting field meetings with contractors and residents, measuring quantities, preparing pay estimates, and resolving contract issues.
- Reviews, evaluates, develops and recommends solutions for design, construction, and maintenance challenges.
- Performs plan design for in-house public works projects including plan and specification preparation, material estimates, and cost estimates.
- Performs plan review of public infrastructure projects and coordinates with other engineering and city staff.
- Review and update City's standard construction details and specifications.
- Assist with pavement management, municipal state aid system reports, permitting, storm water management, CAD/GIS and other engineering duties as needed.
While these areas are the primary responsibilities of the Sr. Engineering position, if hired as Engineering Tech II these are the requirements you will be working toward in your first two to three years. At the City we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.
Position Requirements
Education: AA Degree in Civil Engineering, Land Surveying, or a related field required; Understanding of civil/municipal engineering design function and principles through training and/or work experience preferred.
Work Experience: Minimum of two years of experience in the field of municipal engineering and/or construction inspection required for Engineering Technician II and 5 years of same experience for Sr. Engineering Technician required; experience in methods of construction, engineering standards and practices and strong math and problem solving skills required; surveying experience beneficial.
Technical Skills: Certification and training in Bituminous, Concrete, Grading and Base, Erosion Control, and Work Zones preferred; Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) required. Ability to read and accurately interpret plans, details, specifications, plats, legal descriptions and other technical documents required.
Physical Requirements: Physical efforts range from a field environment to an office environment. The field environment includes observing and navigating on, around and through public and private infrastructure (streets, utilities, buildings, etc.); meeting with property owners; and visiting construction sites, grading sites, and various environmental areas. The office environment includes some minor lifting, operating office equipment, and extended use of a keyboard.
Working Conditions: Outdoor activities are exposed to traffic impacts, uneven terrain, construction and grading sites/equipment, noise, dust, weather, etc. where safety equipment is required. Most office work involves extensive use of computers and occasion travel to meetings, site visits, or errands outside the office.
